Maris in Hummelstown, PA

Maris, a sweet tricolor girl, has spent the majority of her approximate 8 years as a breeder in several puppy mills. She became so extremely shy and shut down that the breeder decided to release her to rescue. We quickly learned that Maris liked special treats- including string cheese. Progress was slow, but her love of food helped her to gain some trust in humans. For a while she had to be carried whenever she went out and froze as soon as the leash was clipped to her.  Steps and leash walking took a bit longer before we saw progress, but after about six weeks she was a different dog.

Our main goal was to socialize her. She went at least one new place a week. Differently places to walk, play dates, a cavalier picnic, outdoor fundraiser, pet friendly stores, etc. when Maris first goes somewhere new she is hesitant. She freezes as if she can’t move. But a little encouragement usually gets her moving- followed by encouraging words with a treat and soon her curiosity wins and she moves with confidence.

Maris also started nose work classes and is learning to find treats hidden in boxes. These exercises have been shown to build confidence in shy dogs and has certainly proven to be true for Maris.

Maris is crated when her foster family is not home and will often go the crate on her to sleep when they are home.

She now walks nicely on a leash and enjoys her daily walks. She also enjoys exploring a fenced in yard if given the opportunity. She isn’t a fan of snuggling on your lap but will curl up next to you or gently put out a paw to remind you to pet her.

Maris would do best with a family for a calm dog for companionship. She can often be found snuggling with the other dogs in her foster home. She seems to enjoy the company of calmer children, but would do well with adults who spoil her with affection.

An ideal home for Maris would be a family that continues to socialize her and take her new places. Positive reinforcement training and continuing with nose work classes would be great for her as well.
